The average energy used per square meter of wood used for furniture is only about 0.16 kWh per square inch, compared to 2.1 kWh per sq. ft. of plastic, according to the IESR study.

This difference is smaller than the energy consumption of a new car, and the energy required to power a microwave oven, the report found.
