Walmart has acquired plastic deckers and playsets to replace plastic bags in its stores, reports The Wall Street Journal.
The Walmart acquisition, which is valued at about $10 billion, will see the retailer use recycled plastic bags for storage and for packing of its own items.
The company is also investing $1 billion in recycling programs, according to the Journal.
Walmart also plans to begin using recycled plastic bottles, with an emphasis on small businesses, to improve its sustainability.
The move comes after Walmart’s CEO Craig McMillon called the plastic bag problem “a crisis” that needed to be solved.
The plastics company is known for its plastic bags and has been criticized for making its products more environmentally friendly.
It has pledged to cut plastic bags by 20 percent by 2020.
